About the walk

The trail to Waimea Falls is about 3/4 of a mile and takes approximately 30 minutes. It is paved the entire way, with gentle hills. There are several gravel paths off the main corridor, for more adventurous walkers to explore all our botanical garden collections.

Watch for the alaeʻula, the native Hawaiian birds who make their homes in our ponds.

Stop at the Hawaiian cultural sites along your way, such as Kauhale, the ancient Hawaiian living site. There, you can learn about the life and culture of early Hawaiian people. Talk story with our resident artisans, who each have a unique traditional Hawaiian craft to share with you. Participate in our new Kaʻapuni o Waimea program to become a Hoʻokipa Ambassador. Inquire at Hale Hoʻike for more information.

  • Kaʻapuni o waimea

    Time: 9 am to 3 pm, Tuesday-Sunday

Self-guided with locations Hale Ho‘ike, Kauhale, Kahua Pā‘ani (Hawaiian Games Site)

Ka‘apuni o Waimea – meaning to travel around or circuit through Waimea - is a program of meaningful engagement and collaborative learning, an enhanced opportunity to experience our Valley. Guests are guided through three key cultural sites - Hale Hō‘ike, Kauhale, and Kahua Pā‘ani. At each site, guests engage with a different aspect of Waimea, and Hawaiiʻs history, and learn about associated Hawaiian cultural values.

The overarching cultural value of Ka‘apuni o Waimea is ho‘okipa – which is hospitality from a cultural perspective, the action of treating others as we would like to be treated. It is our hope that through this experience, guests will learn about the positive impact of hoʻokipa, and will carry this attitude throughout the island.

Participating Ka‘apuni o Waimea guests will be given an identifying sticker at each cultural site. Upon completion of the kaʻapuni, guests will earn a Ho‘okipa Cultural Ambassador Certificate, along with a unique Waimea Valley collectible pin.

Ka’apuni o Waimea stations are opened from 9am to 3pm and the program is at the convenience of our guests.
